Medical Isolation Monitoring Solution

1. Standard Compliance & Application Background

According to IEC 60364-7-710:2021, medical premises are classified into Group 0, Group 1 and Group 2 locations. For Group 2 medical areas where patients are exposed to direct electrical contact with medical devices, an IT isolated power system is mandatory to eliminate electric shock risks caused by insulation faults.
Group 2 medical application scenarios covered by Acrel’s solution include:
  • Operating Rooms (OR)
  • Intensive Care Units (ICU)
  • Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU)
  • Cardiac Catheterization Labs (DSA/CCU)
  • Surgical Recovery Rooms
  • Intermediate Care Units
Conventional TN-S power systems will trigger power cut-offs once insulation leakage occurs, which may lead to fatal risks for critically ill patients. Acrel’s complete medical IT system retains continuous power supply under single ground fault, with full insulation monitoring, fault alarm and optional circuit fault localization to guarantee safe, stable power for life-support medical equipment.

2. Full Product Portfolio of Acrel Medical IT System

Acrel provides a one-stop hardware suite fully compliant with IEC 61557-8, IEC 61557-9 and IEC 61558-2-15 standards, all products passed CE and TÜV certification.

  • H-class reinforced insulation, withstand 4200V/min dielectric voltage test
  • Ultra-low leakage current <0.2mA, efficiency over 96%, noise level <40dB
  • Low inrush current (<12 times rated current) to avoid surge impact on medical equipment

2.2 AIM-M Series Insulation Monitoring Devices (IMD)

Two models for different project budget and functional demands:
  1. AIM-M10 (Economic Model)

DIN rail mounted (54×85×64mm), basic monitoring for small operating rooms without fault location.

  • Real-time insulation resistance detection (10~999kΩ adjustable threshold)
  • Transformer load current & winding temperature monitoring
  • Self-test function, PE line breakage alarm, 1 relay output
  • RS485 Modbus-RTU communication, stores up to 20 fault records

     2. AIM-M300/SG (Advanced Model)

Supports matching with AIL fault locators for circuit pinpointing, suitable for ICU/NICU multi-bed wards.

  • Retains all functions of AIM-M10
  • Built-in locating current injector for insulation fault positioning
  • Dual communication ports: RS485 Modbus + CAN bus
  • Two relay alarm outputs for on-site and nurse station notification

2.3 AID Series Alarm & Display Panels

Remote monitoring terminals installed on operating room walls or nurse stations to visualize system status:
Real-time display: insulation resistance, transformer temperature, load current, fault codes; with sound alarm, mute and self-test buttons.

2.4 AIL Series Insulation Fault Locators

Matched only with AIM-M300/SG, used in ICU, NICU and multi-circuit medical areas to locate the exact branch with insulation failure without power shutdown.
  • Models: AIL150-4 (4 channels), AIL150-8 (8 channels, max 24 channels per IT system), AIL160-6 (6 channels, max 48 channels per IT system)
  • DC 9~36V wide power supply, CAN bus communication
  • Compliant with IEC 61557-9 standard, CE & IEC certified
  • Independent current transformers for each circuit to detect fault branch rapidly

2.5 Auxiliary Supporting Components

  1. AKH-0.66P26 Current Transformer: Collect load current signal for IMD measurement, 0.5% high accuracy, 5000V isolation voltage
  2. HDR-60-24 DC Power Supply: DIN rail installation, 100~240V AC input, 24V DC 2.5A output, supplies power to AIM-M300, AID and AIL devices

3. Three Standard System Schemes for Different Medical Zones

Scheme 1: Basic Operating Room Solution (No Fault Location)

Suitable for single operating room with limited budget

Bill of Materials:

1 × AITR8000S Medical Isolation Transformer

1 × AIM-M10 Insulation Monitoring Device

1 × AKH-0.66P26 Current Transformer

1 × AID10 / AID150 Alarm Display Panel

Working Principle: The isolation transformer converts TN-S grid to IT system. AIM-M10 continuously monitors insulation resistance, transformer temperature and load. All data is transmitted to wall-mounted AID panel for real-time status check and local fault alarm.

Scheme 2: Advanced Operating Room Solution (No Fault Location)

Suitable for large operating rooms with stable power supply monitoring demand

Bill of Materials:

1 × AITR8000S Medical Isolation Transformer

1 × AIM-M300 IMD

1 × AKH-0.66P26 Current Transformer

1 × HDR-60-24 DC Power Supply

1 × AID150 Alarm Display

Working Principle: AIM-M300 supports richer data recording and communication, powered by independent 24V DC module to avoid power supply interference. AID150 LCD screen displays historical fault logs for maintenance tracing.

Scheme 3: ICU / NICU Comprehensive Solution (With Fault Location)

Mandatory for multi-bed intensive care wards requiring rapid fault troubleshooting

Bill of Materials:

1 × AITR8000S Isolation Transformer

1 × AIM-M300/SG IMD with locating signal generator

1 × AKH-0.66P26 Current Transformer

1 × HDR-60-24 Power Supply

1 × AIL160-6 / AIL150 Series Fault Locator

1 × AID150 / AID200 Central Display Panel (Installed at Nurse Station)

Working Principle: When insulation leakage occurs, AIM-M300 sends locating signal to AIL fault locator, which identifies the faulty circuit automatically. Nurse station display panel shows the exact faulty branch, enabling maintenance staff to fix issues without power cut for other patient beds.

4. System Topology for Hospital Power Distribution

The whole hospital power framework adopts dual mains supply + backup diesel generator. Power is divided into Group 0, Group 1 and Group 2 medical loads after low-voltage distribution.

All Group 2 critical medical areas (OR, ICU, NICU, DSA room) are equipped with independent Acrel medical IT isolation systems, each set with dedicated UPS backup to guarantee zero power interruption during insulation single fault.

5. Certifications & On-site Project Cases
